Five silver maple trees were planted at the main Manchester Science Park site at Lloyd Street North in the city on Monday, November 9th , to mark the science park’s 25th anniversary.
Jane Davies, CEO of Manchester Science Parks (msp ), planted the fifth silver maple tree at the ceremony on Monday afternoon, marking a quarter century since the science park opened its doors for business in 1984.
Ms Davies said: “Recession is often viewed as a driver for innovation and nowhere is this more apparent than with the achievements of msp.
“The science park was established in the 1980s as a way of diversifying Manchester’s economy during a time of recession, providing the means to exploit the knowledge of the city’s universities for commercial success.
“That aim has long been achieved with msp facilitating the flow of knowledge and ideas between academia and industry and nurturing the development of hundreds of knowledge based companies over the past 25 years.
“Today, with the world once again in recession and innovation flourishing, msp remains at the forefront, providing opportunities and support for the entrepreneurs and businesses of tomorrow,” Ms Davies concluded.
The five silver maples trees, each representing five years in msp ’s history, were planted along Lloyd Street North, at the side of the park’s Skelton House.
msp ’s staff and management were joined at the tree planting ceremony by Board members, representatives from tenant companies and former CEO and Chairman, Professor John Allen.

One of the first science parks in the UK, msp was established in 1984 as a visionary collaboration between Manchester City Council, the University of Manchester and the private sector.
At the beginning, the land on which msp now stands was mostly brownfield and the Science Park itself was just one building, Enterprise House. Today Enterprise House is one of seven buildings on the main Manchester Science Park site,
which provides 20,000sq m of office and laboratory space adjacent to the University of Manchester.
In addition, msp has branched out across the City Region to offer accommodation at two additional locations: the state of the art Turing House at msp Technopark and within the Technology Centre in North East Manchester’s spectacular One Central Park.
As well as developing its physical space, msp has continued to attract and support knowledge-based enterprises of all sizes. msp is currently home to 94 tenant companies, spanning high-tech sectors such as ICT, digital media, biotechnology, technical consultancy, environmental and industrial technologies.
