SmartLife® Technology Ltd is a UK based medical technology company, aiming to become a leading global provider of personalised wearable monitoring systems. SmartLife® Technology Ltd provides intelligent body monitoring garment technology for a range of commercial and public sector markets.
Founded in 2004 SmartLife® is an unusual blend of investors and entrepreneurs taking a majority share in the formation of a university spinout. Led by Mark Pedley CEO, SmartLife® management team backgrounds lie in business ownership, corporate IT and medical diagnostics. Investors include MelbaTex Pty Ltd and Merseyside Special Investment Fund (MSIF) and the company has raised more than £2 million since 2004.
Technology
With six patents approved or pending, SmartLife® technology includes

- HealthVest™ next-to-skin body monitoring garment provides full ECG, pulse rate, respiration rate, tidal volume and energy expenditure data
- Real time wireless transmission of data
SmartLife® technology represents a paradigm shift for the healthcare, professional sports and hazardous environment sectors. Traditional high-cost monitoring, especially for hospitalised cardiac patients, can be replaced with wearable, robust remotely-monitored garments. SmartLife® plans to licence its technology to key market players whilst maintaining R&D for future innovation.
Business focus
SmartLife® will focus on the US market in 2008 for its HealthVest™ product as part of its plans to increase sales to £10m by 2012. Mark explains: “There has been interest from across the UK, but I’m currently spending most of my time speaking to organisations in North America. Large sportswear manufacturers are based there and the cost savings that can be generated within the health sector are even more pronounced than in Western Europe.”
The company knows it has a major advantage being based in UMIC facilities, and especially in the north campus incubator. Mark points out that the company benefits not only from a close physical proximity to academic researchers involved in the company’s R&D but from a ‘credibility’ perspective. “SmartLife® is trusted and respected because we are on campus and able to network closely with academic staff, rather than being physically and operationally remote”.
