Big Chip Awards 2010 - last chance to enter
The deadline for this year’s Big Chip Awards, the biggest digital awards outside London, is fast approaching. The awards, now in their 12th year, are open to businesses excelling in the use of digital technology, and the deadline to enter is 5pm on Monday 8 March. There are 12 categories open to businesses in the North West, plus awards for standalone games and student and environmentally sustainable efforts, and an international award for innovation. Visit www.bigchipawards.com to enter before the 8 March closing date. Shaun Fensom, chair of Manchester Digital, said: “The past 12 years have seen a transformation in the way we live our lives. The growth of The Big Chip Awards celebrate how forward-thinking digital companies and creative agencies across the North West and beyond are taking the lead in creating the technology that will define the next decade.” The awards are organised by Manchester Digital, the independent trade association, and Insider is acting as media partner alongside trade publication New Media Age . The winners will be announced on 10 June at the Palace Hotel in Manchester.

2010's new categories
Two new awards are up for grabs at this year's bigger-than-ever ceremony. The new categories on offer include the Big Green Chip Award and the Little Chip Student Award . Both are open to entries from businesses across the north of England. The Big Green Chip Award can be an application of digital technology that has directly or indirectly helped improve or preserve the environment, or a digital project that is exemplary in achieving its goals in an environmentally sustainable way. The Little Chip award is open to open to higher and further education institutions for a website, mobile application or animation that demonstrates creativity in the design. Please note that the deadline for entry for the Little Chip award has been extended to 5pm on Friday 26 March to co-incide with the end of the academic term.

Are you game for it?
The north of England is home to the games developers and studios behind many market-leading titles. Levels of activity are feverish, and the Game of the North award seeks to recognise some of the excellent work done by the talented studios across the region. The award is open to developers from the North East, North West and Yorkshire and Humberside who've been working on standalone electronic games on any platform. The winning entry at last year’s ceremony was Evolution Studios for its Motorstorm: Pacific Rift title. The judges said the game pushed the boundaries not only in graphical terms but in terms of effects, gameplay, connectivity and how it had taken the franchise forward.

Going global
Now in its third year, the International Award for Innovation is a truly global affair, open to any project from anywhere in the world. The category, which was launched in 2008 to celebrate ten years of the ceremony and 60 years since the invention of the first stored program computer in Manchester, is open to projects that demonstrate exceptional innovation in digital media or digital technology. Example projects might be a new online service, a new use of digital technology in a product or service, or a new internet business model. Last year’s winner was New Concept Gaming for its innovative jOG add-on for the Nintendo Wii. The application enables gamers to benefit from aerobic exercise while playing on Wii titles and is the brainchild of managing director Brendan Ludden, who set the business up in 2005.
