Institute of Physics: IOP Business Forum

                                     14 December 2009

The Institute of Physics (IOP) is a scientific charity devoted to increasing the practice, understanding and application of physics. It has a worldwide membership of over 36,000 and is a leading communicator of physics-related science to all audiences, from specialists through to government and the general public. Its publishing company, IOP Publishing, is a world leader in scientific publishing and the electronic dissemination of physics.

The Institute of Physics has recently created a new “IOP Business Forum”, in which participation is currently being sought.

Business and industry are an integral part of the physics community and so we hope to build a new relationship with businesses, through the Forum, which will enable businesses to contribute to the full range of Institute activities, including schools education, public policy activities, outreach and professional development. The Business Forum will also be asked to contribute to, and attend, events aimed at promoting physics in business and its impact throughout the economy.

The Institute’s strength is its membership, and we are committed to working with members to build a stronger Institute and a stronger voice for physics. We will be hosting meetings next year where members and others in businesses can provide input directly into our public policy work, leading to the creation of a manifesto for physics. Our target is the upcoming UK election and more details will be circulated soon.

Membership of the network is free. The network is in its early stages, and will evolve over the coming months. The only commitment by expressing an interest is to receive further information and invites as the network develops.

If companies are interested in participating in the Forum, or have any other questions about the Institute, they should contact Louise Butcher (louise.butcher@iop.org ), North West regional officer, or Alex Connor (alex.connor@iop.org ), Business and Innovation Policy Manager.
